Ohio BWC - Claims Management Platform

The Ohio BWC Claims Management Platform is a full-stack web application built for the State of Ohio to assist case workers in handling, tracking, and managing workers compensation claims and managed care organizations across state government operations.

I took over the project from a former engineer in the early stages of design and development and assumed ownership of the React frontend and the Node.js and Express web server, which acted as a mediator between the client-side application and a Ruby backend developed in house by the BWC team. One of the more distinctive aspects of this project was the UI approach that was chosen before I joined, the interface was designed to mimic a Windows desktop environment, complete with taskbar, start menu, and multi-window drag and drop interactions, with the goal to give case workers a familiar environment for navigating complex workflows without a steep learning curve.

Working within a government context introduced constraints that typical product work does not, strict data handling requirements, approval processes for UI changes, and coordination with an internal client team that had their own development timeline and priorities. Navigating that kind of environment as the sole engineer on the engagement for the web app was as much of a learning experience as the technical work itself.
